The floor boards of the hives are treated on the outside with wood preservative to extend the life of the wood, as hives can be resting on the ground when at locations. The wooden bottoms are lined up for the cut. The bottoms are cut out in the center so that a wire mesh can be inserted – this is for mite and other pests to drop off. The mesh is stapled to the inner bottom of the hive. The existing hives are sanded down before staining and painting. The interior of the ‘maintained’ hive is burned out to remove any old bacteria, pests…
(Detail of burning hive interior) Each frame (9 to a hive) is then hand-scraped to remove dirt, moths… The scrapings are put into a wheelbarrow. The scrapings are then placed in a drum for ‘new life’ – candles, wax blocks, cosmetic use, etc. The frames are left with some of the old wax to ‘start’ off the newly introduced colonies. All our hives are wooden and need to be assembled by hand, maintained with linseed oil stain, then painted and branded with a registered number and/or our name stenciled for identification. This is a year-round maintenance.
